Why is my TikTok not getting views? (Real fixes)

April 8, 20266 min readBy FollowNow Editorial

Your TikTok video has 237 views after 24 hours. The next one had 180. The one before that, 350. Something is capping your reach. Here are the six causes that account for almost every low-view problem we see, with diagnostic checks for each.

First, the boring baseline

TikTok shows your video to an initial batch of 100-500 viewers (the cold-start sample). If that sample retains and engages well, TikTok pushes to a larger batch. If they don't, the video dies. Per TikTok's official explainer, completion rate + re-watch rate + shares are the dominant signals.

If your videos are dying at 200-500 views, the algorithm tested you and decided not to expand. The job now is to figure out which of these six things is killing the test.

Cause 1: Shadowban / distribution restriction

TikTok can quietly limit your distribution if your account triggered a content filter — without telling you. Symptom: a sudden, sustained drop where every video underperforms by the same magnitude (e.g. all videos around 200 views, none breaking out).

How to verify: open Analytics → Content → check Average Watch Time on your last 5 videos. If those metrics are healthy (>50% completion, >10% likes per view) but the views still cap, you're almost certainly distribution-limited.

Fix: stop posting for 7-14 days, then resume with a clean topic that doesn't touch any flag triggers (no political content, no medical claims, no controversial collabs). Most soft shadowbans lift within 14-30 days.

Cause 2: Your hook is dead

If your videos open with you walking up to the camera, adjusting your hair, saying "hey guys, today I want to talk about..." — the algorithm has already decided you're a low-retention creator. The 1.5-second hook rule is real and unforgiving.

How to verify: Analytics → individual video → check the retention graph. If <50% of viewers stay past the 3-second mark, your hook is the problem. Even great content with a weak open will die.

Fix: add a pattern-interrupt to frame 1 — text overlay with a contrarian claim, a fast cut, an unexpected visual. Or open with the most shocking 1.5 seconds of your video and back-fill context after. See our TikTok views playbook for hook formulas that consistently retain.

Cause 3: Watermarks from another platform

If your TikTok was originally a Reel, a YouTube Short, or a CapCut export with a visible watermark, TikTok's content-quality filter detects it and suppresses distribution. Same is true of TikTok's own "Save with watermark" feature when used to repost a downloaded video.

How to verify: review your last 10 videos for any logo, watermark, or platform brand mark in any corner of the frame. If you see Instagram's watermark or CapCut's, that's your culprit.

Fix: shoot natively in TikTok or use a CapCut Pro / equivalent workflow that exports clean. Crop/zoom existing videos to cut out watermarks if you must re-post.

Cause 4: Niche drift

If you started as a fitness account and your last 5 videos are about mindset, business, and trending challenges, the algorithm doesn't know what audience to serve you to. Niche-coherence is one of TikTok's strongest distribution signals because it determines who the For You feed sends you to.

How to verify: open your profile grid and ask yourself: "Can a stranger look at these thumbnails and tell me what this account is about in one sentence?" If not, the algorithm can't either.

Fix: commit to one clear niche for 14 days. Even if your account had different content before, 7-10 same-niche videos retrain the algorithm faster than most creators expect.

Cause 5: Cold-start ceiling (new account)

New accounts have lower initial distribution batches. If your account is under 90 days old and you've posted <20 videos, you're still in the algorithm's "unproven" bucket — every video gets tested with fewer viewers than an established account would get.

How to verify: if account age × video count is low (<100 video-days), this is probably it.

Fix: sprint 14-30 days with 2 videos per day. The combination of frequency + early engagement pulls accounts out of the cold-start phase. Some creators also seed initial videos with view services — that's what our TikTok views page is built for.

Cause 6: Your topic is restricted

Per TikTok's Community Guidelines, certain topic categories are eligible for the For You feed only with caveats — medical claims, financial advice, weight-loss content, political content. Other categories are entirely ineligible — anything sexual, violent, hateful, or referencing self-harm.

How to verify: read your last 3 underperforming videos' captions out loud. If they include phrases like "lose 10 pounds", "earn $10K/month", "my anxiety", or "this politician", you're probably hitting a restricted-topic filter.

Fix: rephrase. "Lose 10 pounds" becomes "a small change that made me feel different". "Earn $10K/month" becomes "the freelance project that worked for me". TikTok's filters are keyword-shallow.

Diagnostic decision flow

What if it's none of those?

Sometimes the cause is mundane: time-zone mismatch (you're posting at 2 AM in your audience's window), pacing issues (you're posting 8× per day and the algorithm is rate-limiting you), or just early-iteration luck (your first 30 videos finding your voice). The 6 above account for ~90% of cases we see. The remaining 10% usually resolve with the simple intervention of posting consistently and watching the data.

Frequently asked

How long does a TikTok shadowban typically last?
Most soft shadowbans lift in 14-30 days if you stop the triggering behaviour. The trigger is usually banned hashtags, restricted-topic mentions, or content-policy issues. Sustained violations can extend the restriction indefinitely.
How do I check if I'm shadowbanned on TikTok?
Open Analytics → individual recent video → check the "Accounts reached" breakdown. If 90%+ are followers and almost no non-followers, you're shadowbanned on that content. Also try searching your handle in incognito — if your account doesn't appear, you're hidden from search.
Will deleting old videos help if my reach dropped?
Usually no, and sometimes worse. Deleting historical videos can lower your account's accumulated quality signal. Better: post 5-7 fresh strong videos in your core niche to retrain the algorithm on what kind of audience to serve you to.
Why did my views collapse after one viral video?
Two common causes. First, the algorithm tested a much wider audience with your viral video and the bigger sample didn't retain as well — so your baseline reset lower. Second, your follow-up videos didn't match what new followers expected. Stay in the same content lane as the viral video for 7-10 follow-ups.
