How to get verified on Twitter/X in 2026 (paid + organic)

February 24, 20266 min readBy FollowNow Editorial

Twitter/X verification used to mean "notable enough that we hand-picked you." Since the 2022 acquisition that changed entirely, you can now pay for a blue check, organizations can pay for a gold check, and a handful of accounts still get verification for free. Here's exactly how each path works in 2026 and which one matters for your account.

The three checkmark colors in 2026

  • Blue, X Premium subscriber. Available to anyone who pays + meets baseline criteria.
  • Gold, Verified Organization. Available to businesses on the Verified Organizations program.
  • Grey, Government or multilateral-organization account. Free but only for qualifying accounts.

Path 1: Blue check via X Premium

Per X's official Premium documentation, the standard path to a blue check is the Premium subscription. Pricing as of 2026:

  • X Premium: $8/month on web, $11/month via App Store / Google Play (covers the 30% app-store cut)
  • X Premium+: $16/month, adds no-ads experience + larger reply boost
  • X Premium Pro: $84/month, enterprise-tier features + extended analytics

Eligibility checks beyond payment:

  • Account age: at least 90 days old
  • Verified phone number on the account
  • Active and authentic: no recent suspensions, no impersonation, no platform-manipulation history
  • Complete profile: display name, profile picture, header image

After paying, X reviews your account against the above. Most reviews complete within 24-72 hours. If rejected, you keep paying without the check until criteria are met (or you cancel).

What blue check actually unlocks

  • The visual blue checkmark next to your name
  • Reply boost, Premium subscriber replies show higher in conversations than non-Premium replies
  • Edit tweets within 60 minutes of posting
  • Longer posts (up to 25,000 characters)
  • Longer videos (up to 4 hours)
  • Smaller / no ads in For You and Following feeds
  • Bookmark folders + advanced analytics
  • Creator monetization eligibility (ad revenue sharing + Premium-subscriber tips)

Path 2: Gold check via Verified Organizations

Per X Verified Organizations, businesses can pay for a gold checkmark + affiliated employee badges. This tier is popular with crypto and Web3 teams who also run a community channel, and if that is you, our guide to monetizing a Telegram channel covers the other half of that playbook.

Pricing:

  • $1,000/month for the parent organization account + gold check
  • $50/month per affiliated employee account (each employee gets an org-affiliated badge)
  • Per-employee discounts at scale (100+ affiliates)

Eligibility:

  • Must be a registered business or non-profit
  • Provide business verification documents (company registration, domain ownership proof)
  • Account must be tied to a verifiable company domain
  • Compliance check (~3-7 business days)

Path 3: Grey check for government and multilateral organizations

Per X's verified-accounts policy, government accounts (heads of state, ministers, official agencies) and multilateral organizations (UN, WHO, World Bank, etc.) get a grey check for free. Not available to private individuals, NGOs outside the multilateral list, or political campaigns.

Application: contact X via the in-app government-account application form. Approval timeline varies, high-profile accounts often get verified within days; lower-profile government accounts can wait weeks.

The (rare) notability path that no longer exists

Pre-2022 Twitter had a notability-based blue-check application, journalists, public figures, executives could apply and get verified for free if they passed a notability + active-account check. This program ended with the X Premium launch and has not returned.

Some accounts still display a legacy blue check from the pre-2022 era. Those accounts are not paying for Premium, they're grandfathered. X has signaled multiple times that legacy verification could be removed; treat it as deprecated.

Does verification actually help growth?

The honest answer: yes for a few things, no for follower count directly.

  • Yes: reply visibility (your replies surface higher in conversations), creator monetization eligibility, longer posts/videos.
  • No: verification doesn't boost your tweets to non-followers in the For You feed beyond the reply-visibility effect.
  • Mild: some new visitors are slightly more likely to follow verified accounts, but this is much smaller than people expect. Quality of content matters far more. A visible follower base is a separate lever some accounts prime with X followers so a new profile does not read as empty, though it never substitutes for what you actually post.

Should you pay $8/month?

Yes if any of:

  • You reply to other accounts in your niche frequently (the reply boost is the most valuable real feature)
  • You're actively trying to monetize via X's ad-revenue sharing or Premium tips
  • You post threads or long-form content and need the 25,000-character limit

No / not worth it if:

  • You post 1-2× per week and don't reply often
  • You're under 90 days on the platform (you won't get the check even after paying)
  • You're chasing the check as a vanity metric, not for the underlying features

Common verification problems

  • "I paid but didn't get verified." Check the 90-day account-age requirement. Check phone is verified. Check no recent suspensions. Most rejections are one of these three.
  • "I got verified then lost it." X re-reviews periodically. Changes to display name, profile picture, or username can trigger a re-review. If you re-apply after the original issue is resolved, you'll get the check back.
  • "My business won't qualify for gold." Tiny companies sometimes can't verify because they lack a clear domain or registered business presence. The blue Premium path is still available even when gold isn't.

Don't waste time on verification scams

There's a thriving market of services offering to "get you verified" outside X's official program. These are universally scams, either they steal your money, take your account credentials, or get you suspended. The only paths to verification are the three listed above. Anyone claiming a back-door is lying.

TL;DR

  • Blue check: $8/month X Premium + 90-day account + phone + clean record.
  • Gold check: $1,000/month Verified Organizations.
  • Grey check: free, but government/multilateral orgs only.
  • Verification helps reply visibility + monetization eligibility, but doesn't materially boost follower growth on its own; real growth comes from replies, consistency and posting when your audience is active.

Frequently asked

How long does it take to get the blue check after subscribing to X Premium?
Most reviews complete within 24-72 hours. Common reasons for delay: account under 90 days old, phone number not verified, recent suspension history, or incomplete profile. If you meet all the criteria, approval is usually fast.
Can I get verified on X without a phone number?
No. A verified phone number is a hard requirement for the blue check, even with X Premium paid. The phone-verification step is partly fraud prevention, accounts without a phone are too easy to mass-create.
Will I lose the blue check if I cancel my X Premium subscription?
Yes, immediately after the billing period ends. The blue check is tied to active Premium subscription status. Verified Organizations (gold check) work the same way, cancel the $1,000/mo subscription and the gold check is removed.
Does the blue check actually boost follower growth?
Mildly. The biggest real benefit is reply visibility (Premium replies surface higher in conversation threads). The follower-count boost from verification alone is small, quality of content matters far more. Don't pay $8/month if you don't reply often.
